Sawyer had been at the bar serving for a few hours and was on his way out from the kitchen with his dinner when he felt it. Jean was there. He’d felt it before, when Jean walked into a room, but it was heightened, like everything else had been that day. He didn’t know if it was the solstice or the kisses they’d been trading when the girls weren’t looking, but his entire body knew the exact moment when Jean crossed the threshold.

He grinned to himself and picked up the pace. He’d just slid into his spot at the table full of their friends when he felt Sofia tense up. He looked, and Jean was at the door just as he’d known, plus the girls… and someone else. Someone tall and gorgeous and very wealthy looking.

“Oh, Jesus,” Sofia whispered.

The way she said it, the way Addison’s hackles rose nearly visibly, the way that Frankie suddenly looked intensely uncomfortable, only to be topped by how weirded out Jean looked meant only one thing.

Laurent.

“What the hell is he doing here?” Sofia muttered. “Doesn’t he have a fiancé with a title that he needs to suck up to?”

Sawyer gripped his fork. He tried to tell himself that he had no reason to be jealous, no right to be jealous either, but his body didn’t seem to give a damn.

He hated that Laurent had invaded his space.

Jean shot him an apologetic look like he wasn’t quite in control of his own life at the moment and walked over to the table. There were already spots saved for him and the girls, but everyone had to do an awkward shuffle as another chair was added for the newcomer.

Laurent ended up right across from Sawyer, jammed against Jean’s side, while Charlotte and Bernice crowded up to Sawyer like they knew there was something weird going on.

Laurent was introduced to everyone, but it didn’t feel like it usually did, when someone was just absorbed into the little group like they’d always been there. It didn’t feel like that at all. Instead, it got tenser and tenser as the minutes went by.

Sawyer’s mom came out with dinners for the rest of the crowd, and Laurent looked down his nose at her lasagna. And, ugh, he kept doing that thing, the one where he spent the entire dinner loudly reminding Jean of things that only they could possibly know about. It was seriously immature. Sofia was steaming in her seat next to him, and Sawyer? Sawyer was getting angry.

His face was getting all hot, like he needed fresh air, like he couldn’t stand to be stuck in a room watching Jean get goddamn caressed by the guy he’d loved his whole life while Sawyer was sitting right there. Sawyer felt it thrum hard, then, the energy coming from the ground, from the air, from the moon. It felt like his hair was standing on end and it was so damn irrational.

He didn’t do anger. He’d never done anger. Sawyer was mister laid back, mister everything’s cool.
